This is why your content sucks
Understand this simple principle and start become noticeable, even in a crowded niche.
Let me start with a confession:
For years, I’ve been “copying” other content creators.
What do I mean by copying?
Obviously, I’m not talking about stealing their work or doing unethical things.
The copying that I was guilty of was way more subtle.
It happened on an unconscious level.
I was guilty of copying and pasting their ideas.
I simply consumed their content and then created my version of it.
While this is not inherently bad (we all have to start somewhere) — it prevented me from growing outside their scope of thoughts.
In other terms:
I was simply regurgitating what others were saying.
Often in a less better way.
The worst part?
I wasn’t aware of that.
Because you don’t know what you don’t know.
And here’s the thing:
You are probably regurgitating, too.
And this is a problem.
Because by doing this, we just replicate what the “big players” in our niche say.
Most of the time in a less effective way.
Before discussing the solution, let’s investigate why this is the case?
Why do we regurgitate?
As humans, we’re trapped into what’s called “availability heuristic.”
A fancy term to say that we are more likely to recall and give importance to information we recently came across.
This means that the information you surround yourself with has a direct impact on the content you create.
Regurgitating is human.
So the problem is not regurgitating.
Because other content creators and thought leaders you follow are regurgitating, too.
But here’s the thing:
If you want to stand out in your niche,
You can not afford to just regurgitate what the “big players” are saying.
You have to start regurgitating the right way.
And here’s the harsh truth:
As long as you’re going to regurgitate what the “big players” say, you’ll never be able to stand out in your niche.
Why?
Because you start with a huge disadvantage.
You decided to enter a game that you’ve already lost in advance.
What do I mean by that?
The “big players” are by default already established.
They have their audience.
They have a strong positioning.
They have more notoriety and testimonials.
And they also have more marketing dollars than you.
Because this is the truth:
You’re a newcomer.
And unless you have a clear competitive advantage, you’re going to lose.
The switching cost for their audience to start following you, aka Mister Nobody — is just not worth it.
Understand that you can not compete on a field with players better than you.
If you do that, you’re mutilating yourself.
Here’s what you have to do instead:
Play a game that you know that you can be the best at.
Don’t even bother entering a playground where you know that you’re going to lose.
In other terms:
Stop following what others are doing.
Start regurgitating stuff your audience doesn’t know about.
Here’s how to do it:
Combine different fields of expertise, and come out with your own stuff.
Easier said than done, right?
